Proposed parking law could impact Atlanta development

by Elizabeth Kanzeg Rowland

An Atlanta parking restriction could be relaxed.

Atlanta City Council member Jason Dozier introduced a resolution that would eliminate minimums for off-street parking in the city. The legislation is part of an overhaul of Atlanta’s zoning laws and mirrors a law already in place that removed parking minimum restrictions for developments along the Beltline.

“The removal of parking minimums aligns with the City’s Vision Zero goals by reducing vehicle dependence, calming neighborhood traffic and encouraging safer, more walkable environments,” the resolution argued. “As Atlanta continues to grow, the City must ensure that its zoning code supports the efficient, equitable and sustainable use of land, allowing future generations to enjoy a city that is more affordable, accessible and environmentally resilient.”

The document also pointed out that parking lots could consume Atlanta’s limited land supply, possibly preventing the addition of housing, small businesses or beautification spaces.

Council members Jason Winston, Liliana Bakhtiari, Carden Wyckoff and Matt Westmoreland supported the proposal.
