Atlanta startup seeks to streamline utilities setup for new moves

by John Yellig

An Atlanta-based startup that seeks to take the hassle out of setting up utilities following moves will go online tomorrow.

Cottage provides a one-stop shop for setting up or transferring gas, water and electricity services to people recently moved in to new residences. Instead of spending four hours on the phone with different providers, a Cottage user can simultaneously sign up for all services in five minutes on the app’s website, co-founder and CEO Connor Stewart told Atlanta Agent.

Cottage’s initial roll-out will be in Atlanta and Sandy Springs, with other areas in Georgia and beyond expected to follow, Stewart said.

Stewart and fellow co-founder Zack Schmitz hope to work with area real estate agents, bankers, home inspectors and “anyone and everyone” involved in the homebuying process to spread awareness of their new service.

While Atlanta-area water and electricity services are delivered by single utilities, gas customers have more than 10 providers to choose from. Cottage allows users to compare prices and plans in one place rather than manually comparing them, making the site useful for people who haven’t just moved as well as those who have, Stewart said.

Eventually, Stewart and Schmitz hope to expand the site’s capabilities beyond utilities to provide a single, unified interface a resident can use to manage all of their “Cottage’s” functions.
