New Custom Google+ URLs: Good for Social and Search

If you are already using Google+ for search engine optimization and social media purposes, you are already aware how difficult it can be to drive traffic to your page since your URL contains a long string of numbers. However, all this is changing now that Google+ is offering custom URLs for both users and pages. The new format will allow your business to send visitors to a much cleaner, simpler URL: http://www.plus.google.com/+YourUsername.

To be eligible for the new custom URL feature, your page must be in good standing. For local businesses, this means that your Local Google+ page must be verified as a local business. Non-local Google+ pages must have their profile linked to a website.

After meeting the criteria, Google+ will automatically place a notification on your page to let you know that you can update the URL for your page.

Here are the next steps:

  1. Click the Get a Custom URL button.
  2. The approved list of URL(s) for your page will be displayed. If there is more than one option, choose your preference. You can also add numbers/letters to make it more unique.
  3. Agree to the terms of service.
  4. Click Change URL.

After the new URL has been approved, only changes to capitalization or accents can be made. This means that before you click the “Change URL” button, you need to make sure the new URL is exactly what you want.

While the new URLs are not only prettier and easier for sharing, they are also more search engine optimization friendly. Since most s will include your company’s name, this should help improve the site’s ranking when people are searching for your business.
