How far will a $1,500 rent budget go in Atlanta?

by Emily Marek

A $1,500 monthly rent budget will only get you so far in many of the biggest cities in the country. But how far can that same budget go in Atlanta?

Rentcafe used MLS data from 200 U.S. cities to determine which city offers the most square footage for $1,500 per month.

Nationally, $1,500 will on average get you a 782-square-foot apartment — of course, that size varies widely from city to city. For example, in No. 1-ranked Wichita, Kansas, $1,500 is a pretty sizable budget, with which you’ll be able to afford a 1,463-square-foot apartment. But in Manhattan, N.Y., ranked lowest on the list — you’re unlikely to find even a studio apartment for that price (in fact, you’ll be crammed into just 243 square feet of space). It’s a similar story for most big cities on the East and West Coasts.

In Atlanta, the study estimated $1,500 will get you an 821-square-foot apartment. That space ranked No. 59 among the 100 cities with populations over 225,000. The city’s average rent is $1,848 for an average square footage of 971.

Unsurprisingly, some of Atlanta’s suburbs offer more room for the money, with Clarkston providing as much as 1,413 square feet for $1,500, followed by Forest Park with 1,347 square feet and Morrow with 1,290 square feet. At the same time, other suburbs give much less space: $1,500 will rent 773 square feet in Alpharetta, 791 square feet in Sandy Springs and 820 square feet in Chamblee.
