Atlanta is one of America’s best college towns

by Elizabeth Kanzeg Rowland

A new study from WalletHub named Atlanta one of the best college towns in America.

Using data from sources including the U.S. Census Bureau and the National Center for Education Statistics, the finance company ranked college towns and cities based on metrics like wallet-friendiness, social environment and academic and economic opportunities.

Atlanta ranked No. 7 among all towns and cities and No. 5 among large cities. The city’s hot social scene helped boost its ranking: It placed in the No. 2 nationwide for social environment, second only to Honolulu.

Atlanta fell behind in the budget-friendliness category, placing 242 out of 415 towns and cities. The city offers plenty of academic and economic opportunities, however, ranking No. 105 out of 415.

“Atlanta stands out among the nation’s best college towns for offering strong academic opportunities paired with vibrant urban life,” said WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo. “Atlanta combines a dynamic social environment with diverse academic institutions and a solid job market. Students benefit from access to top schools like Georgia Tech and Emory University, a thriving economy and a wealth of cultural and recreational options that make college life both enriching and exciting.”
