Atlanta is one of the best U.S. cities for science, technology, engineering and math careers, according to a new study from WalletHub.
The finance company ranked cities based on metrics like STEM job availability and salary potential using data from the U.S. Census Bureau and Bureau of Labor Statistics. Excellent educational opportunities and investment in scientific advancement helped rocket Atlanta to a No. 2 ranking.
An abundance of job openings boosted Atlanta’s score. It boasted the third-most job openings for STEM graduates per capita and was the metro with the ninth-smallest disparity between women and men in STEM fields.
Atlanta STEM professionals make a median of $110,000 per year when adjusted for the cost of living. That’s one of the top 10 median earnings nationwide.
Of course, education bolstered Atlanta’s top score. It placed No. 3 for engineering universities.
Beyond STEM career opportunities, Atlanta offers an excellent quality of life. The city was recently named one of the best for singles and for pursuing a healthy lifestyle.
“Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) jobs tend to have high salaries, and job opportunities grow at three times the rate of non-STEM jobs,” said WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo. “We can only expect this to accelerate in the future as new technologies continue to change the employment landscape. The top metro areas for STEM professionals have high-quality schools, an abundance of jobs and high pay.”
