Atlanta named one of the next top tech towns

by

Atlanta ranked at No. 2 on realtor.com’s list of The Next Top Tech Towns. The website looked at major cities across the country to see which ones have a significant amount of tech talent as well as affordable housing options, unlike Silicon Valley.

The website cites top-ranking schools like Georgia Tech as a major contributor to help Atlanta remain at the top of the tech game. Many of the local entrepreneurs get their start at Georgia Tech’s Advanced Technology Development Center, which is said to be the largest and oldest campus-based tech incubator in the country.

However, the other main factor to push it toward the top of the list is the affordability in the area. The website found that it was not difficult to find an affordable home within city limits or the nearby suburbs, a co-working space and low cost of living overall.

Realtor.com looked at the 500 largest cities in the United States based on a number of factors including the percentage of employment in the tech industry, operations of major tech companies, number of startups per capita and number of tech companies per capita. It also factored in local real estate and rental affordability based on 28 percent or less of an average engineer’s salary.

Atlanta was also recently ranked as one of the best cities for job seekers by NerdWallet. They found that cities with tech companies were growing significantly and attracting new residents.
