lori-g-mcdowell-virtual-properties-1

Lori G. McDowell is an agent with Virtual Properties Realty Biz, Carrollton.

What was your first job in the realty industry? I began my real estate career as a Realtor with Benchmark Brokers, who was later acquired by RE/MAX United.

Where did you grow up? Carrollton, Georgia, located 45 minutes west of Atlanta.

What is your favorite free-time activity? Running, because it clears my mind and makes me feel like a champ.

What do you do to relax when you’re stressed? Exercise is a stress relief for me, and I enjoy working out at the gym using the Nike Training Club, which is a free app.

Growing up, what did you want to be? I wanted to be an anchorwoman as a young child. I was attracted to the industry because it educated viewers about the latest news. I enjoy researching and had fun communicating what I had learned. Eventually, I became interested in the sale of land and promoting new concepts, and found my place in the “Personal Dynamics of Art and Selling” class. Dr. Jim Burton inspired me with his experience in real estate, ultimately sparking an idea to change paths from mass communications to a BBA with a major in real estate. Researching, educating, negotiating WIN/WIN situations that serve others and being part of bringing ideas to reality is fullfilling. Communication is the key.

If you could have lunch with a well-known figure (living or not), who would it be and why? I would have to say lunch with Barbara Corcoran. She is a self-made real estate mogul investing in lives. Her honesty helps people grow and develop. If I had the chance, I would ask her how she identified her greatest opportunity. Then, I would want her to teach me. Her success in real estate is inspiring.

Where is your favorite place to hang out? A weekend trip to the beach is my favorite place to hang out.

What do you love most about the industry? Building relationships, sharing valuable information and negotiating WIN/WIN situations for everyone involved.

How do you distinguish yourself from the crowd of agents? Actively learning about the latest technology and serving a targeted market.

What is the most difficult aspect of your job? The most difficult aspect of my job is converting a piece of raw land into a profitable real estate venture. The fun part is promoting a development project to the targeted market it was built for.

Where do you go to network and meet new clients? There is a sea of opportunity right outside my office door. I network wherever I go in the community – school functions, dinners, friends, family, social media and church. Most importantly, I network with other agents in different areas and refer business.

What has been your greatest accomplishment? The greatest accomplishment in my real estate career was being honored by peers as Rookie of the Year in 2004. It gave me courage to keep moving forward, do my best and cherish those relationships you build along the way.

What was the last good movie you saw or book you read? I would definately have to say the book Getting Over Yourself by Jennifer Beckham, a former Disney princess. It inspired me to look deep within my soul. It challenged me to live with no excuses. I have purpose and meaning. Everything I need is already inside of me; I just have to use it.

What is your favorite restaurant? My favorite food is sushi, and I typically try sushi in different area restaurants. My favorite local restaurant is Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse located in Douglasville, GA. I enjoy the Japanese culture, and was introduced to the Japanese language as a sixth grader. Enjoying sushi in Japan is on my bucket list!

Architecturally speaking, what is your favorite building in Atlanta? My favorite building is Symphony Tower, located at 1180 Peachtree Street in Midtown. This breathtaking 41-story skyscraper has gorgeous views of the city of Atlanta.

What kind of car do you drive? I drive a Cheverolet Surburban because it’s big enough to transport my clients, family and friends comfortably. Not to mention, it is a safe, American-made vehicle.

Smartphone or paper? The smartphone is one of the greatest inventions. It helps me work faster and smarter.

What is your favorite city after Atlanta? I am a southern gal and a bit partial to the Southeast. So, after Atlanta, my favorite city would be Nashville. It is a great place to have fun, meet people from all walks of life and enjoy the diverse entertainment and dining. In addition, you might even catch a glimpse of a rising star, and it’s a short drive from Atlanta!

What is your advice for someone new to the industry? Find a mentor, learn, plan, serve and earn GRI rookie year!

What’s your favorite real estate iPhone/Android app? GoFMLS, because it provides the information I need at my fingertips.

Who are your favorite people to follow on Twitter? I like learning from the best in the business. Inman 100 was a great place for me to find the right people to follow, such as @sarahssjones and @zachschabot.
